2014 Supply Chain Benchmark Survey

Supply Chain

Today’s customer expects an overall brand experience offering convenient merchandise availability and visibility, complete product information, free delivery, and hassle-free returns – and she expects it where and when she wants it! Welcome to “real-time retail!” To meet this generation of customers’ needs, progressive retailers are shifting their business organization away from traditional “siloed” channels into a seamless, unified customer-facing experience. This requires a new way of thinking about inventory and the supply chain. Retailers now need to understand:

  • How do we create real-time insight and visibility into inventory by channel?
  • What is the best solution to generate a unified forecast across all channels?
  • Can we create an effective integration and collaboration between retailer and manufacturer to deliver appropriate quantities on time and avoid the “bullwhip effect?”
  • From an organizational perspective, what is the best way to unify planning and allocations teams to support the unified plan and inventory goals?
  • What is the best approach to establish clear compensation and incentive structures (based on order/fulfillment channels)?

Aeropostale

aeropostaleAeropostale is a shopping-mall-based specialty retailer of casual apparel and accessories. The company maintains control over its proprietary brands by designing, sourcing, marketing and selling all of its own merchandise. BRP assisted Aeropostale by helping it develop a distribution network strategy to support growth from 250 stores to nearly 1,000 stores and an e-commerce facility. BRP also assisted in the design of two automated distribution centers, each more than 250,000 square feet.

Avon

avon_logoAvon is an international manufacturer and distributor of beauty, household and personal care products, founded more than 125 years ago. Avon realized that it must update and optimize its supply chain infrastructure in order to grow sufficiently, so the company came to BRP. We analyzed its North American supply chain operations, modeled distribution options, performed financial analysis and designed a fully automated distribution facility. Additionally, we managed its site selection process and assisted in negotiations for site development. In the end, we reduced Avon’s annual logistics costs by $53 million, reduced order-processing costs for web orders by 65 percent and reduced inventory levels in four branches by 22 percent.
